Refurbishment / Restoration

Refurbishment of elements for restoration or renovation.

In the case of missing, broken or deteriorated parts in floors, claddings or enamelled ceramic items, it is possible to reproduce the same size, shape and colour elements in order to be inserted in the surrounding originals. Sinks, tiles, special pieces in case of moving masonry kitchens that are out of production.

A product in Bottega Artigiana is always hand made and the project develops with the following phases:

    • 1. Evaluation of the element to be produced
Listening to the needs and characteristics of what you want to accomplish, or by viewing your drawings with relevant specifications to determine feasibility (sometimes modifications can be made/requested for purely technical requirements with reference to specific ceramic works) in case of reproductions, the best solution is to physically handle the piece to be recreated, to fully understand each detail and to correctly evaluate the colour, any drawings are welcome but not necessary in this case.

    • 2. Production of the Model
The element begins to be worked entirely by hand, depending on the object to be produced, ceramic or plaster mixture for molds, with larger dimensions than the original (but proportionate to the percentage of removal of our material during drying and subsequently in the first firing phase). With this model the first mold in plaster will be created that will also give life to the first semi-finished object.
The realisation of a prototype or model is indicatively within a cost of € 200.00 to € 1500.00, depending on the model to be produced.
The implementation of a Customer Approval Sample, then finished as per project, ranges from € 100.00 to € 500.00.
    • 3. Creation of molds for production
The first mold will also be used as a matrix to produce identical molds for production, commensurate with the amount of material to be produced. Other types of shaping may be needed depending on the product so we can always offer the best result for any quantity or model.
    • 4. Production
At this point, the molds that will make our element are made, which once extracted must be dried and then finished.
The molds have an average life for producing a hundred pieces, depending on the model, and then they have to be eliminated and replaced with new ones.
After finishing and possibly sizing (in case of tiles), they will be fired in high temperature ovens and you will then get the object in "bodies ("biscuits")" or "Semi-finished" as they are called, ready for enamelling and/or decoration as per the project.

    • 5. Colour and / or decor
After choosing the enamelling and/or decoration, we go on to draw up the model, followed by the firing that will indelibly fix the whole.
This can be a laborious process if it is reproductions for restoration, as you will need to perform various tests to calibrate the correct tone and find the one closest to the sample.
Chemical reactions that occur in firing and that interact between the base dough, enamels, oxides, and any other unwanted compounds are sometimes not perfectly controllable. This is why colour may be subject to slight tonal variations and occasionally small blemishes may appear which are not to be regarded as defects but as a guarantee of craftsmanship hand-crafted.

The cost of manufacture once in production, ranging from a few dozen or a few thousand pieces, will be commensurate with your requests.
